Our Shaddai Youths will be heading to the mission field from Dec 13-19 for their yearly mission trip. This would be the 6th year that they have done this activity together. The past mission trips had been an amazing experience for all involved and I am thankful for the continual support of the parents and church for coming alongside with our Youths. Going on a Missions Trip is not a cheap endeavor, but I’d believed that the benefits and experience gained from these trips outweigh the cost.
These are some advantages of Mission Trips that I can think of :
Broaden Perspectives – there is so much more out there besides school and Singapore
Challenge Comfort Zones – stretching them to do things that they never thought they could do ; putting Faith into works
Empowerment – giving them responsibilities to lead and plan; a platform to take initiatives and ownership
Bonding – creating an environment to learn to work together and depend / trust on one another
Cultivate Grateful Attitude - open their eyes and hearts for the many blessings that they have
Develop Empathy for missionaries and the problems they face - to truly understand the work of a missionary and be an effective praying partner
Develop a greater vision and commitment for missions – to pray for the Lord of Harvest to pray for more laborers / praying for God to use them as His instruments in missions
I can see that the youths who had gone for the mission trips have grown in terms of personal and spiritual maturity. I do pray that as they work hand-in-hand with the missionaries and workers to plant the gospel seed, that they too may catch a glimpse of the power and provision of our Heavenly Father. Then these experiences would become the building blocks of their spiritual journey when they return. Once they have tasted and seen the goodness of the Lord, may they never be satisfied just being a “Sunday-only” Christian.
